Proposal

THE LILNOUNS SCHOOL COMMUNITY MURALS

THE PROBLEM

Across rural communities in Nigeria, some children attend public primary schools without a proper school bag. Books may be carried in nylon bags, old shopping bags or by hand. This creates a simple but real barrier: books can become damaged, difficult to carry and poorly organized, while purchasing a school bag can place an additional burden on low-income households.

At the same time, many underserved communities lack attractive, educational and inspiring public spaces that reflect the hopes and aspirations of their children.

The Lil Nouns School Bag & Community Mural Initiative addresses both challenges through one connected intervention:

putting a proper school bag in a child's hands and putting a message of education, creativity and hope on the walls of their community.

THE PUBLIC GOOD

The initiative will provide 200 durable, purpose-designed Lil Nouns school bags at no cost to selected children attending underserved public schools in Ogun and Abeokuta.

Alongside the bag distribution, the project will create community mural featuring the Lil Nouns school bag as the central visual element.

The mural will represent the journey of a child: carrying books today, learning today and carrying dreams toward a better future.

The pilot will focus on children who genuinely need the intervention rather than distributing bags indiscriminately.

The mural will provide a lasting public asset that remains in the community after the school bags have been distributed.

THE IDEA BEHIND THE MURAL

The mural concept:

A Lil Nouns school bag at the centre of the artwork with educational and aspirational elements emerging around and from the bag.

These may include:

  • Books and notebooks
  • Community and Nigerian cultural elements

The central message will communicate:

Every child deserve the opportunity to learn

The mural will also include appropriate Lil Nouns Noggles branding and the project message:

WHO BENEFITS?

Direct beneficiaries

  • 200 children
  • Public primary and secondary schools

Each selected child will receive a Lil Nouns school bag.

Indirect beneficiaries

  • Teachers and schools
  • Parents and caregivers
  • Local artists
  • Local communities
  • Children and young people who interact with the mural

The project will use needs-based beneficiary selection, prioritizing children with no proper bag, those using nylon or unsuitable bags and children identified by teachers or community representatives as needing assistance.

THE BAG

The school bag will continue to use a simple, affordable and durable design.

Proposed specification

Colour: Black, White and Green

Material: 600D polyester or equivalent durable material

Main compartment: Books-focused storage

Front: Lil Nouns branding + official Noggles treatment

Back: Plain black

Straps: Padded and adjustable

Side: Subtle woven Lil Nouns/Noggles branding

Zipper: Simple zipper

The design avoids unnecessary pockets, accessories and expensive manufacturing techniques.

Every unnecessary dollar spent on decoration is a dollar that could potentially help another child.

The objective is to create something recognizable, durable and affordable.

COMMUNITY MURAL

Mural Design & Production

The mural will be created at a carefully selected community school wall in the project area.

Mural development process

Step 1 — Site Selection

Identify a visible, suitable wall within or near a participating school/community.

Step 2 — Wall Assessment

Check wall condition, dimensions, accessibility, safety and suitability for exterior artwork.

Step 3 — Concept Design

Develop a mural concept built around the Lil Nouns school bag and the theme of education and children's dreams.

Step 4 — Community Input

Engage teachers, children, community representatives and local artists to contribute ideas.

Step 5 — Wall Preparation

Clean, repair and prime the wall before painting.

Step 6 — Mural Execution

Professional/local artists paint the approved design.

Step 7 — Finishing

Apply necessary finishing/protective treatment and clean the surrounding area.

Step 8 — Documentation

Photograph and document the completed mural and community engagement.

COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION

Community participation will be expanded beyond the school-bag distribution.

Teachers and school representatives can assist with:

  • Identifying children
  • Verifying beneficiary lists
  • Coordinating distribution
  • Collecting feedback
  • Monitoring continued use
  • Providing input into the mural theme

Local artists will be engaged to help turn the Lil Nouns school bag concept into a meaningful piece of public art.

Parents and community members can provide feedback on both the school bags and the mural.

MANUFACTURING & DELIVERY

The school-bag process remains:

Step 1 — Final Design

Finalize dimensions, materials, branding and official Noggles artwork.

Step 2 — Prototype

Produce a sample bag.

Step 3 — Quality Check

Check stitching, zippers, handles, shoulder straps, material strength, printing/embroidery and dimensions.

Step 4 — Production

Manufacture the agreed quantity.

Step 5 — Final Inspection

Inspect finished bags before distribution.

Step 6 — Transportation

Move bags from the manufacturer to selected schools.

Step 7 — Distribution

Distribute directly through participating schools.

Step 8 — Mural Completion

Complete and document the community mural before or alongside the distribution event.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES

By the end of the initiative:

Education

200 children receive durable school bags to help them safely carry and organize their learning materials.

Creativity

Children are exposed to a positive creative experience that connects art with education and future aspirations.

Community Development

One prominent community space is transformed through a meaningful educational mural.

Public Awareness

The Lil Nouns school bag becomes a recognizable symbol of education, opportunity and hope.

Long-Term Legacy

Unlike the distributed school bags, which provide an immediate individual benefit, the mural remains as a lasting public reminder of the project's impact.

RISK MANAGEMENT

Risk: Bags cost more than expected

Mitigation: Obtain multiple manufacturer quotations and prioritize bulk production.

Risk: Wrong beneficiaries

Mitigation: School-assisted needs assessment and beneficiary verification.

Risk: Poor-quality bags

Mitigation: Prototype and quality inspection before full production.

Risk: Distribution leakage

Mitigation: Distribution register and documentation.

Risk: Mural wall is unsuitable

Mitigation: Conduct site assessment before approving the mural location.

Risk: Mural deteriorates quickly

Mitigation: Use suitable exterior-grade paint, proper wall preparation and protective finishing.

Risk: Child privacy concerns

Mitigation: Appropriate consent and safeguarding procedures.

CONCLUSION

We are not trying to solve every problem in Nigeria's education system.

We are solving one small problem for 200 children, while creating lasting piece of public art for their community.

We cannot fix the entire education system with 200 bags. But we can make sure 200 children don't have to carry their school books in nylon bags and we can remind their community what those children are capable of becoming.
