Proposal Summary:
Voting power calculations will henceforth be based solely on REG tokens held on the Gnosis blockchain.
The REG token is available on two other blockchains: Ethereum and Polygon. REG holdings on these two blockchains will no longer be included in the voting power calculation.
Objective:
To prevent the types of bottlenecks recently encountered during voting power calculations.
REG holdings on Ethereum had become inaccessible due to the unavailability of indexers for the corresponding subgraph.
Motivation / Context:
Initially (April 2024), REG was deployed on three blockchains: Gnosis, Ethereum, and Polygon.
A bridging service is available to transfer REG tokens between blockchains.
Voting power is currently calculated based on REG holdings across all three blockchains (https://wiki.realtoken.community/fr/DAO/TechnicalOp).
The voting power calculator retrieves REG balances from subgraphs set up by RealT (funded with GRT tokens to incentivize indexer activity).
In practice, very few REG tokens are held on Ethereum and Polygon. The latest snapshot (April 10: https://t.me/realtokendao_official/12826/25052) showed only three wallets, one of which belongs to RealT.
The simplest solution to avoid the aforementioned bottlenecks is therefore to calculate voting power based only on REG tokens held on Gnosis.
Setting up a dedicated DAO indexer would be another option, but it requires time and funding.
Bridging functions will remain active.
The Ethereum and Polygon REG subgraphs, which will become inactive, will be automatically archived by The Graph. RealT will reallocate its GRT tokens to other subgraphs.
Implementation steps:
- Forum post for preliminary discussion (one week with "Suggestion" status, followed by "Proposal" status)
- Vote on Tally (10 days)
For this vote, voting power will be updated based on data from the three blockchains if possible (otherwise, the values from the April 10th snapshot will be used again)
- If the proposal passes, the next voting power update will be based solely on data from Gnosis.
Teams involved:
- RealT (@Michael): Implementation of the new voting power calculation method
- Proposer: Assistance with drafting the proposal and the voting process
- DAO Member: Preliminary discussion on the forum, followed by voting
Budget:
This proposal does not require a DAO budget.
Roadmap:
Reverting to the previous state will be possible in the future by holding a new vote and reactivating the corresponding subGraphs.
Key terms:
- REG: The DAO's governance token
- The Graph: A service that allows blockchain data values to be recorded (indexed) via subGraphs
- Indexer: A third party that populates the subGraph based on blockchain updates
- GRT Token: The token used by The Graph service in its economic model
- Voting power: The weight of a vote regarding a DAO decision, proportional to the amount of REG held
- Snapshot: A record of token quantities (in this case, REG) held by each wallet at a specific point in time (usually prior to a vote)
