## Security Council Election

You can find the Security Council Elections specification in [Section 4 of the Arbitrum DAO constitution](https://docs.arbitrum.foundation/dao-constitution#section-4-security-council-elections).

An election will be in one of five phases:

### Phase 0: Interim period (no election)

- Live countdown to the next election (phase 1).
- Anyone can click the "start election" button to begin the next election when the countdown has finished.

### Phase 1: Contender Submission (7 days long)

- Anyone can register as a contender for the election.

### Phase 2: Nominee Selection (7 days long)

- All voters can connect their wallet and view how many votes they can cast during this phase.
- A list of current "contenders" (potential nominees) will be displayed with the following information:
  - Total votes received by a candidate.
  - The contender has moved onto the next stage after successfully receiving 0.2% of votes (supply of votable tokens).
  - Whether the contender has completed the compliance process with the Arbitrum Foundation.
  
- All votes must be cast before the countdown for Phase 2 has finished.

### Phase 3: Compliance Process (14 days long)

- View list of successful nominees.
- Waiting period for the Arbitrum Foundation to complete compliance checks.
- The election completes if there are fewer than six successful nominees (the Arbitrum Foundation will fill the remaining seats).

### Phase 4: Member Election (21 days long)

- If there are more than six nominees, it is up to voters to pick the six nominees who will join the Security Council.
- All voters are encouraged to vote in the first 7 days, otherwise their voting weight will decrease until the election finishes.
- Votes must be cast before the countdown has completed.
